[Question]: Is AMF for Linux being killed?

Open SaltyBet opened this issue 7 months ago • 4 comments

Perusing the Radeon™ Software for Linux® 25.10.1 Release Notes, I stumbled upon this nugget:

  • Consistent with AMD’s commitment to Open Source software, we will be making the following changes to the composition of the Radeon Software for Linux releases, starting with 25.20:
    • AMF will no longer be included in the release. AMF users are advised to transition to VA-API / Mesa Multimedia.

Any comments/confirmation from the AMF devs?

New versions of AMF will continue to be released for supported Linux distros. The goal is to provide parity in features between Windows and Linux. Installation procedure will be different. Stay tuned.

I'm using ROCm and want to use Handbrake as well, but since they refuse to provide VAAPI compatibility, I have to stick with the AMD AMF version, which is now out of the driver. But since I do use the latest driver because of ROCm... how do I install it?

Current Radeon Linux driver still has AMF. https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/linux-drivers.html You may face installation issue that could be resolved by adding "--accept-eula". See: https://github.com/GPUOpen-LibrariesAndSDKs/AMF/wiki/Driver%20Linux With the next major driver release for Linux AMF runtime will provide a separate installation path and will have to be installed on top of the next Radeon/amdgpu Linux driver. We will publish instructions at Wiki above. Also, please note, that ROCm is not a Graphics driver like Radeon/amdgpu and requires one. https://rocm.docs.amd.com/projects/install-on-linux/en/latest/reference/user-kernel-space-compat-matrix.html
