Wouldn't it be better to put that dependency at a third_party subfolder instead of core? (You also seems to have multiple entries defined in .gitmodules)

As of right now we are doing deadlock and dota builds and some maintenance for their corresponding hl2sdk branches so I guess this could be closed for now.
I assume this is long resolved, please, reopen if you still has issues with it.
