How to shrink the VMDK file

Hello Is it possible to clear cache, wipe free space and shrink the VM disk file as per the other VMware plateforms? The following command is not possible to execute in Terminal: cat /dev/zerofile > zero.file ; rm zero.file -bash error: the file zero.file is in read only mode Regards
