Admin UI Usability Enhancements for User Management

Problem

There are many small ways the user management portion of the Admin UI could be improved to make it easier to use.

Specific requests:

  • Can't click directly on a user - must find and click small action buttons on the right
  • Requires multiple screen transitions for basic tasks
  • UI looks dated ("old school") compared to modern admin interfaces
  • Doesn't feel like an upgrade from their current solution

This impacts support efficiency and increases the risk of user management errors. It also makes support stakeholders hesitant to invest in the migration effort to FusionAuth.

Solution

Many small improvements here would make a big difference. For example:

  • Make user rows fully clickable to open details
  • Enable inline editing for common fields
  • Consolidate frequent actions to reduce screen transitions

Alternatives/workarounds

  • Build custom admin interfaces using FusionAuth APIs
  • Extensive call center training (doesn't address underlying usability issues)

@zoefarrell Will some of this be addressed as part of the Admin UI overhaul?

The dated look of the UI will be addressed in the Admin UI reskin, but I don't think any functionality changes are included in the scope of this work.

I like the suggestion of "Make user rows fully clickable to open details". I'd also go further and suggest the UX of gmail where when you hover over a row, additional actions are available (what we have in the select drop down). Keeps the UI looking clean, but makes it quicker to do an action.
