Enhancement: Time Savers When Going For Ranks
Issue Checklist
- [X] I have properly named the enhancement
- [X] I have checked the issues/discussions pages to see if the enhancement has been previously suggested
What is your suggestion, and why should it be implemented?
Sometimes when I'm going for a P-Rank I won't notice that I got a bad or something and my combo broke until like 30 seconds later, which wastes a bunch of my time. Even worse is when I'm trying to Golden P-Rank a song and I get one good but then don't notice until the end of the song! This wastes a ton of time. So I suggest an option to play a noise when your combo breaks, you get a good, or just not at all, set by the player ofc. This way there will be immediate unmissable audio feedback that you fucked up whatever rank you were going for and you can reset the song without wasting time.
Another issue I'll have when trying to get a good rank is song intro's. Some of them are very long, which adds to the build up and is super cool when you play them first in story mode or you're just trying to have a good time, but when trying to P-Rank up it can get very annoying very fast. Every single time I mess up my P-Rank (Often), I have to reset and then sit through sometimes like 10 seconds of intro before I get to play the song. It doesn't sound like much but it adds up fast. So I would also propose an option when playing in freeplay to allow you to skip a song's intro to right before the first note. This way upon resetting you can get right into the next attempt without the wait.
I like this idea! There is no way this is getting turned down, otherwise I would be quite dissapointed.
Side note it would be really funny if you made it some super elaborate and depressing womp womp sound. Or just let us pick it ourselves, that could work too.
Maybe a Rank Display somewhere instead of a sound!

That could work, but the whole reason I suggested a sound in the first place is because if you're focusing on the notes you can easily miss visual cues like a good popping up in the ratings area, and during long sections of a song you could go for a long time without being able to check for risk of missing notes. Also if you're just really focused maybe you don't check that at all! But an audio cue is impossible to miss. While I'm not against also having a display of your current rank on screen, I think an audio cue should still be an option as it is unmissable and doesn't require the player to break gameplay flow to find out how they're doing.
I think something cool to go along with this would be some kind of little P rank graphic similar to Rhythm Heaven that breaks apart or disapears along with the sound you suggested! I know the devs have been surprisingly against adding rating UI, but I think this would satisfy some while still being minimal and fun :) It could also first change from a Gold P to a Purple P when getting a good, then completely breaking when no longer having a perfect combo to represent if you are on a golden P rank or a purple one. Could also be toggleable from settings and maybe only visible on freeplay?
(Very rough concept using the Rhythm Heaven P graphic):
While I get the idea, I don't really like it, because it'd mean perfectionist players will just restart instead of playing through the whole song and improving overall (and getting closer to making their overall skill at playing this one song actually perfect).
I remember watching a review of a rally racing game, that literally changed the way the reviewer played racing games - from restarting after every failed turn to playing constantly and winning the game after the AI ends up making mistakes.
That, and the having the icon there effects you psychologically as well, to the point where you might end up mucking up earlier than you would of from the stress of failing and seeing the icon change.
Though on the other hand, many players already restart after failing, for example, trying to perfect the tutorial can be very tiring (left, right, left right, left [UH-OH!]). Something like this would as per the title, save your time and some of your sanity.

Well, the P-Rank graphic, as with my original audio que idea, would of course be an option. Though, I don;t know if you play rythm games really intensely, but restarting on a fail whenever you're going for a specific clear type (In this case we have an FC and a PFC/SFC) is pretty normal, in fact, it's standard. While getting better at a song by playing it and dissecting sections you struggle on is good for practice, at some point, you've gotta hit the gas and go for the rank you want. Indicators and multiple attempts at a rank are industry standard in rhythm games and among rhythm gamers.
