Add Turn Timer Warning (Sound + Visual Effect) [bounty: 22 XTR]

Open emna9 opened this issue 8 months ago • 4 comments

Currently, the only warning is the timer turning red, but there's no sound or strong visual effect, so it's easy to miss especially during intense gameplay. As a result, players may unintentionally lose their turns without a proper alert.

I propose enhancing the timer with:

A short warning sound (like fast ticking) when the unit has about 3 seconds left.

A visual pulsing or flashing effect on the timer to attract the player's attention.

(Optional) A slight UI vibration/shake on the timer itself during the final second for added urgency.

This combination would make it much easier for players to notice their time running out, without being too disruptive to gameplay. It would also help them with accessibility needs who rely on sound cues.

Valid stuff; regarding your proposals:

Last 3-5 seconds could each be "ticked" with some sort of drum beat (tom or bass), increasing in volume.

The skip turn icon could bounce each of those seconds as well, sort of similar thing is required for #1976

Regarding the optional point, doing stuff in the final second is perhaps a bit too pointless. We could have the game shake more and more those last 3-5 seconds, as the icon bounces and ticks are heard each second; we implemented some camera shaking before -> #1721

Great feature proposal @emna9 I completely agree this would make time pressure much more noticeable and intuitive, especially in high-stakes turns.

Additional Suggestion: Alongside the skip-turn icon bounce and audio ticks, we could introduce a subtle red glow or pulse on the active unit’s hex tile in the last 3 seconds. This would visually connect the urgency with the actual unit on the board, reinforcing the time pressure directly where the player’s attention typically is.

@yousefsassy Um, maybe not red glow, but using player's color coding. Sounds good to me, hopefully all methods will all be nicely in sync and not do more harm than good; we'll get to see in practice at some point I guess.

Initially game was designed to have the hexagons green, but the coder who wrote the prototype actually color coded the hexagons and I considered it a great idea (with a bit of tweaking), especially since this is not just 1vs1.
