[Bug]: HDR videos below 8K no longer list HDR entries in the quality selector

Open Konfusius opened this issue 9 months ago • 23 comments

Guidelines

Describe the bug

  1. Open any HDR video up to 4K in FreeTube (e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=njX2bu-_Vw4)
  2. Open the quality settings in the bottom right
  3. There used to be HDR quality options to choose from for most resolutions, but there aren't anymore. When opening the video in Youtube, it lists HDR for all resolutions as expected.
  4. HDR qualities seem to be available for 8K videos, but only for 8K (see screenshots below!)

Expected Behavior

Freetube should list HDR entries in the quality selector on HDR videos, which it did until early February.

Could you please clarify which version of FreeTube you are actually using, because you checked the nightly box but the specified a non-nightly version.

absidue avatar Mar 05 '25 17:03 absidue

Sorry, I just realized that myself... I'm using freetube-0.23.2-nightly-5717

which it did until early February.

You need to provide some prove of this because im not able to verify this.

Unfortunately I don't know how I'm supposed to proof that all HDR videos did play flawlessly until early February. They did for me, and now they don't. I can't be the only one, who watched HDR vids with FreeTube before, so maybe someone else could verify this bug...

Fact is: HDR was supported before, and now it basically isn't.

(Unless, of course, this is a problem on my side, in which case I'd love to see some evidence that HDR actually still works in 4K resolution and beneath, so I can find the fault here)

Here you are talking about the entries in the selector

Fact is: HDR was supported before, and now it basically isn't.

Here you are saying that it isnt supported.

Those are 2 different things.

I got HDR monitor and enabled and I can see HDR quality Also checked SDR/HDR and they do look different (and can be played)

Thanks, this means the problem might be on my end. It's just strange, because HDR works in every other video-application on my system. Re-installing FreeTube didn’t help, System & GPU drivers are up to date as well. I just don't understand why the only HDR option I see is with 8K Videos... @PikachuEXE may I ask which OS you're on?

Konfusius avatar Apr 05 '25 20:04 Konfusius

Win10 with HDR enabled in OS settings DisplayPort 1.4a

Im a bit confused

Master branch on my Ubuntu vm, shows hdr

Dev branch on my Ubuntu vm, shows hdr

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d8289af9-cae3-43a7-8304-4fd0f628be48

Nightly build on win11, doesnt show hdr

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8b4d17d6-05bd-4c39-8335-690cb2675e9f

In case you want to try I use my custom build always (but shouldn't be that different from nightly build) https://github.com/PikachuEXE/FreeTube/actions/workflows/build.yml

For win11 do you have HDR enabled in OS? (I am too lazy to turn off HDR to test

PikachuEXE avatar Apr 06 '25 12:04 PikachuEXE

The panel on my machine doesnt support HDR content evwn though Windows says its enabled. My machine is like 7y/o at this point if not older

Im a bit confused

Nightly build on win11, doesnt show hdr FreeTube_rQ19KxG9sd.mp4

Does it show the 8K HDR option with an 8k HDR video like https://youtu.be/xshkQS54Eww ?

OK, thanks. @efb4f5ff-1298-471a-8973-3d47447115dc you said that the Nightly build on Win 11 doesn't show HDR on your machine, just like mine. Does it look like this for you as well with an 8K video like https://youtu.be/xshkQS54Eww ? Image

Konfusius avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 Konfusius

Also, why doesn't it show me bitrates & codecs for most of the options (all except 720p), while @PikachuEXE 's screenshot shows them for all except 8K and 1080p?

It also doesn't show any AV01 entries for me, only VP9! Could this be the key to this problem?

Konfusius avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 Konfusius

Ideally the bitrates and codecs wouldn't show up at all, it's a bug with shaka-player (the video player we use), it's only meant to add them if the label isn't already unique but they only check the resolution for uniqueness not the SDR/HDR status or frame rate.

absidue avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 absidue

@Konfusius Just to be clear you have a HDR display and have HDR enabled in the Windows settings?

absidue avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 absidue

Additionally what GPU do you have?

absidue avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 absidue

Image

Yes, of course. As I've mentioned above, when I open the video in Youtube, it shows HDR for all resolutions as expected. My GPU is a 2070 Super.

Konfusius avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 Konfusius

Since @efb4f5ff-1298-471a-8973-3d47447115dc seems to be able to reproduce the fault on Win11 (https://github.com/FreeTubeApp/FreeTube/issues/6976#issuecomment-2781343230), it might be a Windows 11 problem? Maybe AV1-related?

Konfusius avatar Apr 07 '25 19:04 Konfusius

@Konfusius this is what i see on win11 using the nightly build

Image

This is what i see on dev branch using my ubuntu vm

Im going to apply the reproduced label. Could be an upstream change?

Hi! I’ve tested the two HDR videos mentioned, and I can confirm that HDR quality options are appearing correctly for both. For both videos, the HDR quality options are listed in the quality selector, and everything works as expected.

I’m using Windows 11 23H2 and FreeTube v0.23.3.

It seems like HDR is functioning properly for these specific videos, so the issue might be isolated to certain conditions or videos where HDR doesn’t show up.

Let me know if you need any additional details or further testing.

While this is a valid issue there isnt anything we can do about this, therefore im closing this issue.
