I've been helping a lab move their workflows and code sharing to GitHub (yay!). They had some questions about what features were available to us in the org. Following definitions from this page, we have access to features listed under GitHub Free for organizations, as well as GitHub Team. We should include some recommendations for how to set this up for labs/projects (e.g., how to arrange a team such that the PI has ownership, with other members added under teams, using nested teams for different projects, etc)

Maybe instead of loading all this info onto this page, I could write up a CompDemo that describes how to onboard a lab to GitHub? I've got my notes from this project so it would be fairly low-hanging fruit.

Main questions to address:

  • What is a reasonable way to set up GitHub repos and teams for a lab's work? What about when a PI needs to own things, but someone else will be managing it?
  • How do we decide to set up who has access to what?
  • How do we add external collaborators?

Reference GitGuardian as the paid service we use for extra security?
