Feature description

A recent change to the Phone app has been made to directly dial a contact when you tap their entry, moving the original functionality of opening up their info to tapping on their profile picture. Considering this is a pretty minor change from a developer's standpoint and a major change from a end user's standpoint, it seems prudent to me to allow the user to choose what happens when either of these two events occur.

I propose putting the choice back into the hands of the user and adding the ability to define what happens when the contact is tapped in both instances. The original feature request that proposed a change to the UX stated that the Contacts app already has the ability to choose what happens when you tap on a contact:

  • Call Contact
  • View Contact Details
  • Edit Contact

It should be a relatively trivial matter to include this functionality to the Phone app as well.

Why do you want this feature?

An action that used to work one way and now works another way feels like you're taking choices away from the user, even if you're improving the functionality. The option to change what tapping each zone does will satisfy all parties involved.

I would also prefer the old behavior. Most of my contacts have different phone numbers. I need to choose the right one before each call. Pressing the small picture on the left of the names is much more difficult, than only press somewhere on the whole line. If I use the option to confirm the call there the number to call is not shown. So I don't know which of the different numbers will be called.

Can you please make the change optional?

If I use the option to confirm the call there the number to call is not shown. So I don't know which of the different numbers will be called.

If you don't have a default number set, it will ask which number to call after the call confirmation dialog.

That doesn't solve the problem of wanting to review which number to call beforehand. You may want to call their work phone or their home phone instead of their cell phone this time. Big screens and small contact photos don't make for a good combination when trying to select them, especially one-handed.

I would also very much welcome this change. I de-googled my parents phones (70+ years old) and they have been using the Fossify apps for a while now. After the change of the click action, they got utterly confused. They can't tell the difference between the contacts app and the phone app. Both look basically the same, and a consistent behavior across both apps is IMHO key for a good user experience. So I second the request/need to have this configurable.

If you don't have a default number set, it will ask which number to call after the call confirmation dialog.

@Aga-C This is not a solution. You currently need to define a default number if you use the "direct call" widgets, since the widget does not allow you to choose which number to call. There is also no "choose number" dialog when using the widget.

I agree. Just noticed this awful behavior/change. I went back to a previous version of the app.

Me too. I don't even like this happening in the Call History list. It really should be an option.
