Feature description

A toggle in the settings, or in the photo-viewer screen, that allows the user to turn the new Ultra-HDR rendering mode on or off.

Why do you want this feature?

This feature would be useful for two main reasons:

(i) Ultra-HDR is not yet a widely supported or accepted format. Sharing, editing or uploading photos to social media often strips the tone map or ignores it since not many devices support Ultra-HDR. It would therefore be very useful to view the SDR version of the photo to select the ones to share/upload more easily and know what the recipient is going to see.

(ii) Any album that is a mixture of Ultra-HDR, HDR+ and SDR photos, especially of the same scene, can create a discontinuous viewing experience as Ultra-HDR photos are - by definition - much brighter, with high saturation of colours. This is a minor issue compared to issue (i).

Additional information

This toggle could be added in two ways (or both can be present): a global setting, turning off all HDR rendering, and a per-photo toggle that quickly allows the user to view the SDR base image inside the viewer screen.

I agree with the first issue. Every platform or messaging app only sends the SDR version. It is now difficult to select the best photos to share with family and friends since the images can look radically different with and without HDR.

@naveensingh I'm happy to attach a small bounty to this issue and/or sponsor you (or somebody else) to work on it. Let me know! :)

I have this same issue, i took some photos in HDR and I like the ability to see it for myself, but it's not something I want to see 24/7 because I hate automatic brightness and automatic screen changes. In addition, the friend I sent them to said the photos look really good, but I have absolutely no idea what they look like on their phone.

I would be willing to contribute as well. Fossify Gallery has become my primary gallery after one too many pushes to enable automatic backups and automatically turning the toggle on in Google Photos.

bounty

My moral compass doesn't allow me to take bribes :)

I would also like to request an option to completely disable this feature. I recently switched to a OnePlus phone and this behavior is really frustrating. I usually keep my screen brightness quite low, and when photos get boosted like this, they become unnecessarily bright and strain my eyes.

What bothers me the most is that OnePlus didn’t add a system-wide toggle to disable it the only place where it can be turned off is in their stock Photo app, where it’s called ProXDR.

I prefer to use your app because it's better.

I’d also like to request the option to disable this feature, as I don’t want some photos to be highlighted in such an unnatural way. In the meantime, I installed the older version 1.3.1 where this wasn’t present yet.

I also would like to request the option to toggle HDR. Having support for it is genuinely awesome, but it's not something I'd like to see running at all times. It's always nice to be able to see how any given photo would look like when shared with people who don't have HDR support, not to mention color accuracy, battery life and screen longevity concerns.

.......Aaaand also it's not fun to get my eyes torched when I'm trying to browse photos in a dark environment, like at night during long travels by train :D
