Feature description
-
Follow CLDR/Thunderbird convention of using normal/short form of territory names (Costa Rica), in the Holiday Calendar list, instead of using full/long form (República de Costa Rica).
-
Make all these names displaying one language/one writing script. 2.1) Long-term solution (need code change): Make these names localisable so they can be displayed in the language that the user fully understand. 2.2) Short-term solution (don't need code change): Make them available in "English name (Native name in native script)" form.
This feature request proposes the (1) + (2.2) solution -- Using short form in English together with native language -- for the time being. While it is not perfect, it is quickest to implement.
(Once localization is fully implemented, (2.1) can be use at that time.)
--
For an illustration, the current list of:
- Argentina
- Australia
- België
- Brasil
- България
- China
- Éire
- Fürstentum Liechtenstein
- 日本
- República de Costa Rica
will be replaced with:
- Argentina
- Australia
- Belgium (Dutch) (België)*
- Belgium (French) (Belgique)*
- Brazil (Brasil)
- Bulgaria (България)
- China (中国)
- Costa Rica
- Ireland (Éire)
- Japan (日本)
- Liechtenstein
*Thunderbird has two calendars for Belgium: https://www.thunderbird.net/en-US/calendar/holidays/
Why do you want this feature?
Currently the names used are inconsistent. Some are in long form and some are in short form. Also, some are in native language of that territory, and some are in English.
These make the holiday calendar list difficult to use, as:
- It is difficult to find as it cannot be sorted very well
- Where to look for Costa Rica? Starting with 'C' or starting with 'R'?
- What is the order in case of mixed writing scripts?
- It made an assumption that the user understands native language of a territory if they want to find one
- For example, to add holidays in Japan, one need to understand that "日本" is Japan. This may not be the case of some foreigners living/traveling in Japan; or someone elsewhere who has a business partner in Japan.
