FAH client - Folding Power slider has poor control over number of slots used

Open wright-david opened this issue 1 year ago • 1 comments

FAH client control v. 7.6.21 OS: Windows 11 No GPU

Expected Behavior

The Folding Power slider has only three settings : Light Medium Full I was hoping for rather more fine-grained control! e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8 .... All cores

Current Behavior

Furthermore the current settings use IMO a rather large number of cores:

Light = N/2
Medium = N-1
Full = N

where N is all available cores (in my case 8 cores / 16 virtual CPU)

Possible Solution (Optional)

  • have additional settings on the Folding Power slider -- possibly showing the number of cores used for each setting on the slider (rather than in the Slots status window)

Steps To Reproduce

Change the Folding Power and observe impact

Context

Raising an issue because a) IMO changing this would be a useful improvement b) in my case the "Light" setting (using N/2 cores) causes my laptop fans to ramp up to a distractingly noisy level and (at least while I'm at the computer) I would prefer to be able to choose a quieter setting - rather than having to Stop Folding altogether.

P.S. now that I've had chance to look around the app some more

Folding 'slots' can also be controlled via Configure > Slots

  • Default is -1 which lets the client choose, and allows control via the main screen's Folding Power slider.

  • A positive number defines the number of CPU slots to use. However there is no control via the main screen's Folding Power slider (which continues to operate but does not affect the number of slots used)

Controlling folding slots from two separate places is IMO a very poor design, and leads to confusion - especially for new users (as evidenced by this bug report).
