I can confirm(Macbook Pro Late 2013 13"). After that, on SwitchResX I configured a custom resolution (CVT-RB) and used 49Hz (instructions here). My Dell Ultrasharp U2718Q supports 60Hz, but I couldn't get there. If you put 60Hz, it will get down to 6 in the list of Custom resolutions.

After having it showing 50Hz (even though I selected 49Hz), I rebooted and now SwitchResX showed 3840 x 2160, 50Hz (PAL) on the Current Resolutions list. Clicked and it worked.

You can confirm this by going to Apple > About This Mac > System Report... > Graphics/Displays. You can then go to Settings and change you "Scaled" size normally and it'll keep at 50Hz.

I have successfully applied steps* on a MBP mid-2012 13" running Catalina 10.15.3. After last step and rebooting the machine I could set the ultrawide resolution for LG 25UM58 for 2560 x 1080 without using SwitchResX. Thanks for all in this community!

*** Steps**

  1. Install otool
  2. Disable SIP
  3. Run script as described above
  4. Set new resolution
