Black Screen with 60 Hz on Mac mini
Hello,
I connected Mac mini (Late 2014 model) to 27" 4K UHD LG 27UD88 (y. 2016) via mDP-DP cable.
I applied successfully the patch IOKit-patcher and installed SwitchResX. System rebooted successfully with no screen problem.
The 60 Hz option is now available in SwitchResX panel. Before, I had only 30 Hz for 3840 x 2160. Unfortunately, when I select the 60 Hz option, the screen becomes black. FYI, the screen is designed to support up to 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz.
I thought combining the patch with a mDP-DP cable would have allowed me to use the 60 Hz. Is there another kind of limitation? Like a hardware one in the Mac mini?
In last resort, I'm thinking to buy a mDP-HDMI 2 active adapter (Club 3D brand) to solve my issue. What do you Think?
Thanks for your help.
With the DP-HDMI2-Adapter(Club 3D) I get 1080HiDPI 60Hz on Mac mini (late 2014), but flickering when scrolling is still a problem - a little bit less than with 30Hz. If I compare with the MBP 2015 (with ATI graphic-card) it's not the same, unfortunately.
In response to my first post. Problem solved! Choose one solution:
- Using UGREEN mDP-to-DisplayPort cable with the patch mac-pixel-clock-patch-V2. Reboot Mac mini with screen turned on. Native 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz should automatically be detected by Mac mini.
- Using Club 3D mDP-HDMI 2 Active Adapter. With this cable you do not need the patch. However, I do recommend using software SwitchResX. For example, with this software, I had still to create a new configuration by duplicating the well detected set 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz while only boosting the frame rate up to 60 Hz. Both Mac mini and monitor did not complain. I also recommend viewing this video.
Summary
Choose only one method:
60 Hz Test | HDMI 1.4 ➞ HDMI 2.0 | HDMI 2.0 ➞ HDMI 2.0 | mDP ➞ DP |
---|---|---|---|
mac-pixel-clock-patch-V2 [1] | :heavy_check_mark: | :x: | :heavy_check_mark: |
mDP ➞ HDMI 2.0 [2] | N.A. | :heavy_check_mark: | N.A. |
Also, the 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz were well detected from these test sites:

I'm with the same issue, but I'm using a MacBook Pro 2015. I will try to set the 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz
resolution, and reboot!
You really have to use the mDP-to-(m)DP cable (mDP connector to MacBook Pro side and DP connector to monitor side), or at least one end of the cable should be mDP so it connects to the MacBook Pro. If you use MacBook Pro's HDMI port, you'll be limited to 30 Hz!
I'm using a Dell u2718q 4k monitor
, with the cable that came in the box, is ok to use this cable ?
The monitor has an mDP connector. It'd be great if you could connect from the monitor's mDP port to the MacBook Pro's mDP port. In all cases, avoid using the MacBook Pro's HDMI port.
I tried, and only the black screen appears :(
Only run with 3840 x 2160 @ 30 Hz
, and I'm using a mDP-to-DP cable.
Same thing with my MBP 2015 retina with Samsung U28E850, if the monitor is in economy-mode. If I desactivate economy-mode, it works fine (best quality with 60Hz without flickering), in contrast to the Mac mini 2014: I reach also 60Hz measured at https://www.vsynctester.com/index.html, but still working with flickering during scrolling. Otherwise the Monitor tells at his information-menu only working the 30Hz. @faxotherapy: Have you controlled the information of your screen, if it's working really with 60Hz??Always more I think, the Mac mini shows 60Hz (e.g. @ switchresx)but the screen can translate the signal only to 30Hz. Does anyone has another idea, what I could change, working with my Mac mini for "real 60Hz"? (As I postet in another post (https://github.com/Floris497/mac-pixel-clock-patch-V2/issues/253) the "mac-pixel-clock-patch-V2" produce a mistake and can't be installed for the moment.
@maliweb I must confess. I still have doubts with regard to whether I really have the 60 Hz or not. According to the test sites the 60 Hz are well detected and Mac mini shows the 60 Hz in system info as well.
However, when I watch a downloaded YouTube video at top specs such as 3840 x 2160 @ 60 Hz, picture motion is not smooth when it is filled with lots of moving objects. Video and audio are also out of sync.
But, if I watch, for example, a jet plane doing some aerobatics, picture motion is perfectly smooth. So, I do think there is some limited improvement when jumping from 30 Hz to 60 Hz. For everyday usage, the jump to 60 Hz is not useless at all.
I must mention that watching 1080p HD movies at full screen resolution (3840 x 2160) yields a not smooth picture motion if the 30 Hz are in use. I have to bump the refresh rate to 60 Hz to make the picture motion smooth.
So, resorting to the patch is definitely useful for me.
It just possible.. I never claimed it will be smooth :) (these mac's don't support this for a reason) check the monitors OSD to see what resolution and refresh rate is used
Here the monitor OSD gives the information about the "Hz"... (using miniDP-->DP or HDMI 1.4-->HDMI 2.0, it's the same...)
Would it be otherwise with another 4K-device?
There is no magical HDMI 1.4 to 2.0 device as far as I know 😅 check SST MST settings (dp1.1/dp1.2) in the monitor
The monitor has the setting dp 1.2 (which is the acutal in the Mac mini 2014...)
Change it between 1.1 and 1.2 and see what settings show up in Switchresx and maybe make some custom resolutions there
With dp 1.1 I got other values...
as with dp 1.2
The System got unstable, and for e few minutes I had difficulties to get an image.
So I returned to "factory settings" in switchresx... and for the moment I am able only to get an image at HDMI, not at dp (settings returned at dp 1.2 on monitor)
What shall I do for getting an image at dp?
These 2 screenshots say absolutly nothing... it's just a settings panel.. chech if 40Hz works on DP
40Hz are working, but the result (by scrolling the browser) isn't better. @Floris497: Do you have ideas for my questions @ post 270?
Hi, Guys. how can I restore to default setting, I just tested. when I test it works fine, but when hit the Display Menu and change the scale to default my screen goes blank. another option is I have to use the dual monitor to make 4k monitor can run again. but it's not good option. let me know you thought. thanks!.
Hi diehendrick
Unfortunatelly I replayed a backup and don’t work with mac-pixel-clock-patch and switchresx anymore. I got to much of Problems for having these 60Hz, which can’t be real mode 60Hz, because the Information of my monitor tells me working with 30Hz. That’s also that what I see by dayly working with this configuration: The Picture is jurky while scrolling, even with these «60Hz». Changing the sesolution was associated with getting a black screen, also in hypernation mode. So – for me all these trayes are unusuable.
All the best, maliweb

Does anyone here, test on Macmini late 2012, I tested on macmini, and not able to get 4K, even though working on 4K only hit 7hz using Switchresx. I am using LG 27600 4K UHD montior.
