Recognize virtual host environments in order to fix #38

This should fix #38 - i am successfully using it in production and development.

My development environment runs the site from a subdirectory, so this is a good indicator that this doesn't introduce a regression with #30 - but by any means, please test yourself.

This fix also enables to fix #48 in a more clean manner.
