Configuration of the console to log in

Using a cable and minicom on my Ubuntu machine, I can see the boot messages (weston image 1.3) just fine. In the end, I get the login prompt but when I type an username, there is no output and the console no longer replies to anything. Using SSH to log in at the same time shows no spurious activity. And nothing in the logs. I'm wondering where to look.
