I guess (gut feeling) that `alacritty` uses the outlines in the font if they are available and uses the bitmaps only if there are no outlines? The `ttf` font does...

Alacritty seems to have 'a problem' when a font is not all-bitmaps it will switch to LCD subpixel rendering and there is no way to prevent that? See for example...
