I'm seeing this a lot only recently. My best guess is that it is a smart firewall kicking in.

the various IIS (windows) servers that I have tested result in a broken pipe.

netscaler load balancers use older version of openssl 0.9.7 and gives broken pipe error as well

I think this happens if the SSL being used isn't OpenSSL
