Icon is blurry at 110% scaling (DPI 106)

Open 28andrew opened this issue 4 years ago • 14 comments

I recently switched from a 1680x1050 to a 2560x1080 monitor. The EarTrumpet tray icon now looks like this: image

I don't recall it looking like that? Is this an issue with my resolution?

The legacy icon appears to work just fine: image

Hey @28andrew, thanks for the heads up. We might be missing an icon size step. Navigate to Settings > General > About and click Collect troubleshooting data. Copy and paste the top portion of the log (before the ---) into this issue.

Well that's new. Is this a custom DPI you set?

riverar avatar May 07 '20 16:05 riverar

Ah, that was the issue. I had a custom scale set to 110%. With the scale set to 100%, both values in the troubleshooting info for dpi are 96 and the icon looks normal.

28andrew avatar May 07 '20 20:05 28andrew

@28andrew Is 110% something you prefer to use? Or was that just a mistake?

riverar avatar May 07 '20 22:05 riverar

It was something I liked to use but now I like the 100% scale, haha. So I guess it's not too bad of a bug. The custom scale setting in Windows even has a warning that some programs may not behave properly with a custom scale.

28andrew avatar May 08 '20 03:05 28andrew

@riverar it's the same with 115% only happens when changing through custom scaling tho

@silverwings15 in your screenshot icon is not blurry

qb20nh avatar Apr 22 '23 05:04 qb20nh

i think i understand why now, the current ET tray icon uses the Win10 design so it looks less sharp next to the thicker Win 11 design. here it is next to the Win10 icon (ET left, system right), the difference is much less pronounced if at all

We indeed use the icon assets provided by the system, so our hands are a bit tied when it comes to custom DPI scaling.

I'll take a look and see if we can switch to the Segoe Fluent Icon glyph (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/apps/design/style/segoe-fluent-icons-font#:~:text=e992-,Volume0,-e993). The notification area doesn't support these glyphs natively so it'll probably never look the same.
