Help translate Far to your language
Some of our translations are outdated and contain English strings here and there. If you would like to help us translate those missing bits, please see the summary table below:

Notes:
-
lng
files contain the UI strings;hlf
files contain the context help pages (F1). - Some of these files contain huge chunks of English text, some are even missing.
- The easiest way to check what is not translated is to compare a file with its English counterpart in any visual diff tool.
- In case of Far all lng files are generated from a single file that contains all the languages together. Its format is quite obvious. Changing that template file is preferable, but
Far???.lng
files from the distribution package can be transalted as well if that's more convenient to you. - Any questions are welcome.
- Adding new languages is, of course, welcome as well.
some are missing because it was hard to translate it without context (several translations are possible based on context) or I didn't know what they mean
@vfekete, if you point to specific strings, I'll help you with the context.
ok, thanks, so
where is this sorting? what does it sorts? (sorting of files based on name, size, ... does not contain words 'Collation', 'Ordinal', 'Invariant' nor 'Linguistic')
MConfigSortingCollation
MConfigSortingOrdinal
MConfigSortingInvariant
MConfigSortingLinguistic
MConfigSortingDigitsAsNumbers
What list this refers to? MListPlaceholder
What kind of streams is this talking about? MFindAlternateStreams
@vfekete, thanks, merged. I've updated the list in the 1st message.
where is this sorting? what does it sorts?
It defines the behaviour of file sorting algorithm. Options - System settings.
MListPlaceholder
MFindAlternateStreams
MConfigDoubleStripeSeparator "Dvojité oddeľovače hlavných stĺpcov"
Note: we've changed 'column' to 'stripe' here, so 'stĺpcov' is outdated.
MChangeSUBSTDisconnectDriveQuestion "Odpojiť SUBST-disk {0}?" MSetConfirmRemoveSUBST "Odpojenie d&isku SUBST"
Note: we've changed 'disconnect' to 'remove' here, so 'Odpojiť' & 'Odpojenie' are outdated.
For MConfigSortingXxx
this may help:
ok, I changed everything remaining + updated fields you changed meanwhile, please have a look.
Thanks, added.
Now the only missing line in Slovak is MQuickViewMFTOverhead "MFT overhead:"
sorry, I must have missed that one, sending Slovak.txt with updated MFT line (I assume, MFT stands for NTFS Master File Table) Slovak.txt
hello, I will try translation to this Sunday for Czech language.
hello, here is my translation of the Czech.txt file.
@michalzobec - thank you, merged.
Note - the txt files in the first post were outdated, so there are still some untranslated entries. I've re-uploaded them, please check the new Czech.txt
@alabuzhev hello, okay, I will look to new file to two weeks, actually I am busy.
@alabuzhev Hello Alex,
here si second file with czech translation: Czech1910.txt
in future, you can contact me for Czech translation :)
@alabuzhev it was okay?
@michalzobec sorry, couldn't do it earlier. Merged in 5640a3fac8362e5cc85deeafc542f4c496f79c98.
Guys, any native Czech speakers here? I've found a couple of very old Czech translation packages which can be used to extend the current localisation. The thing is that they're slightly different and I'm not familiar enough with the language to tell which one is:
- better per se
- better match to the current translation (see FarCze.lng in the same directory with far.exe)
cz_170b4_by_Michal_Breškovec.zip (I plan to use this one since it's more complete) cz_170b5_Miroslav_Pták.zip
Any suggestions?
Hi @alabuzhev, I would like to assist your project with Portuguese (PT) and Mirandese when I have some spare time. Is there a translations-related guide or how-to? Thank in advance!
Is there a translations-related guide or how-to?
https://github.com/FarGroup/FarManager/blob/master/CONTRIBUTING.md#adding-new-lines-to-language-files
@tiagofilipesilva the process is rather simple:
- there are *.lng files, which contain the strings displayed in the UI.
- there are *.hlf files, which contain the context help pages.
Both are plain text, so you could just copy FarEng.hlf and FarEng.lng to FarPor.* / FarMir.* and start gradually translating them as is. Once the files are ready you can send them to us and we will do the rest.
Note: there's no need to translate 100% of the text at once. You could start with baby steps: copy files, update their headers & names, translate a few strings, make sure that everything works as expected and share what you already have. Then we can integrate these new files properly and you can make further changes as regular pull requests (see https://github.com/FarGroup/FarManager/pull/117, https://github.com/FarGroup/FarManager/pull/119 and other translation-related PRs for example).
Also, there are a couple of existing translations: Portugues (ISO-8859-1): https://plugring.farmanager.com/plugin.php?pid=276&l=en Brazilian Portugues: https://plugring.farmanager.com/plugin.php?pid=739&l=en
They are extremely outdated (for Far v1.64 and 1.70 correspondingly), but probably about 60-70% of strings can be reused, which is better than doing everything from scratch. Please have a look, if "Portugues (ISO-8859-1)" is reusable I can help with the initial setup.
Well, I'm not native Czech speaker and as far as I remember I was not adding any lines to any part of the source code (either real code or some other data). I just took existing "task" from the web and translated missing sections mentioned there in simple text file with lines 'original_text translated_text'. I didn't even comited anything, just sent an email with attachment.

hello, I am Czech native speaker. I know personally Miroslav Pták, I am author of old translation of Far Help, for versions 1.7-2.0.
Not make sense use this old translation, I think. More easy will be update existing. I will check again in few weeks.
If you will need any update for Czech translation, please contact me directly. :)
Michal
@michalzobec, thank you. The Czech localisation has been extended a little already, using both of those, but quite a few bits are still missing, especially in the main help file (about 30% translated I think). Please see the first post of this thread for details and the corresponding row in the table there for file URLs.
