What happened?
i was playing a basically vanilla baro game with friends and i unplugged my headphones to fix a microphone problem that was on my side. i plugged the headphones in and i was going to the audio settings to change the output for sound and fix my microphone, when i clicked apply my game froze and i close the game. when i reopened it the game wasnt detecting any audio inputs and output devices at all. i was able to fix it by verifying file integrity but i wanted to know if this could have been because of my computer or if it was on the games side. i was using a custom submarine and the cat banner override mod but i doubt they were the issue. i was able to fix it by verifying file integrity but i wanted to report it.
Reproduction steps
i dont know if this will reproduce it but this is how it happened
- My friends told me my microphone was sounding bad and i unplugged my headphones in the middle of playing a round.
- when i plugged my headphones in i had to change the audio output device to my desktop and then back to my headphones and turn the microphone settings from disabled back to voice activity
- i turned the desktop audio and disabled the microphone and i had no issues
- i then turned both the audio to my headphones and my microphone to voice activity at the same time.
- my game then froze and i closed it from the steam application by clicking stop.
- i reopen the game and i look at the audio settings and there arent any audio output devices or microphones detected
- i verified file integrity and it seems to have fixed it.

Tested in spring-update 466466e3
Could not reproduce the crash nor empty audio devices list, but a part of the provided steps seems to reveal an issue with the audio device list: When the audio swaps to another audio device due to e.g. disconnecting an audio device, the audio settings will still show the old device as selected upon reconnecting, while the audio will not change back to it. To change the audio back to the original audio device, the user needs to swap to another audio device from the settings manually, and then back to the original audio device.
Steps to reproduce:
- Start the game with wired and wireless headphones connected, with the wireless headphones selected as the system default
- Confirm that the game starts with the wireless headphones playing the audio
- Disconnect the wireless headphones
- Confirm that the audio now plays from the wired headphones
- Reconnect the wireless headphones
- Confirm that the audio still plays from the wired headphones
- Open the audio settings in-game (might require opening and closing the settings a few times): the wireless headphones should be displayed as selected, even though they are not used for audio
- Press apply: the audio will not change from the wired to wireless headphones
- Select another audio device, press apply, and select the wireless headphones again, press apply: the wireless headphones correctly play audio again
