The threat to information security posed by poorly-secured services on the Web implies a complacent status quo around its centralized design and infrastructure, which I believe should be improved upon with careful and deliberate effort. As cypherpunks, we solve problems with code, so our challenge is to build a system which is:

• [ ] economically viable

Thesis: We believe that fair markets are among the best ways of solving problems, and so Fabric implements Proof of Work at its peer-to-peer messaging layer. Each message accumulated carries a weight of its own, which is used to prioritize routing decisions in the network.

We anticipate that during network expansion, spot markets will form around interesting data, creating a load-balancing effect between capacity and demand. We encourage the development of these markets in our network by using a no-receipt broadcast protocol, leveraging Zero-Knowledge Contingent Payments to unlock commitments from BID and ASK orders as they can be fulfilled.

Our Approach: Fabric should offer decentralized execution of cryptographically-enforced smart contracts through a robust and familiar application interface, creating a globally-distributed computer tailored to the emerging market for secure, multi-party computations. This network-defined computer will provide execution of an underlying smart contract layer, which governs interactions between contracts and network resources.
