Questbook doesn't spawn, some school tasks don't work (UPDATE JAVA / USE MULTIMC)
-
Modpack Version: 1.1.0, on the FTB legacy launcher
-
Issue: Firstly, whenever I gen a new world I don't get a questbook in my inventory. I can still access the quests from the button in the top left though. More pressingly, I cannot complete the quest to upgrade the wooden chest to an iron chest. The preceding quest to open each chest completes as normal, but after than when I take the upgrade out of the wooden chest and right click on the wooden chest nothing happens. The quest does not complete, the marker is still hovering above the chest, and I cannot continue the pack.

I wasn't sure what was and wasn't relevant, so I played safe and pasted everything starting from booting the FTB launcher. I paused/saved right after upgrading the chest and nothing happening.
-
Is it Repeatable?: Happens every world, and while I haven't tried redownloading on the legacy launcher I'd tried the modpack using MultiMC a few times and had the same problems there.

Known Fix:
Hmm, do you have a weird version of Java or something? That's the only thing I could think of, but it could be a KubeJS bug. As a workaround, you can just skip the school entirely with the command /quit_school, though a couple quests outside the school might not work.
According to the Java control panel I am on "Version 8 Update 111 (build 1.8.0_111-b14)" does that give any clues? Also, what's a "KubeJS bug"?
I was able to skip the school using the button in the top left that the tutorial mentioned. But 1) I worry if any further quests will have problems and 2) I wanted to go through the school to give the modpack a full evaluation, after reading some of the feedback on reddit made me uncertain.
KubeJS is a mod that handles a lot of the school, and some other stuff. I poked the mod dev, @LatvianModder, about it so hopefully we can get this fixed for 1.2.
Thanks for the info. You don't think my Java version is the problem?
I am encountering this same issue. Didn't know there was a physical quest book, and clicked around in the E menu to even start the quests. Then when I got to the wood to iron chest upgrade quest, upgrading the chest does not complete it.
Hi hi I'm here just to say that I have the same issue
- I use a MacBook Pro
- I play the mod pack using a regular Minecraft launcher because Twitch launcher doesn't let me use the new launcher. Like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBu5iwAcKTU (I don't know how to describe it)
I don't know does it affect anything or not
Can @bellum128 and @General-Urist say what OS and launcher they're using as well?

Yeah, for me it is Windows 8.1 pro with the Feed the Beast launcher (whatever the latest stable version is).

Windows 8.1 Pro, with the latest (as of Christmas 2019) FTB legacy launcher version. Same as Bellum it seems.
Man I really have no idea what could be causing this. I just ran through the school again to test something else, and everything worked for me. I have Windows 10 so I can't test with your environments.
For now I would just reccomend downloading the older version, it seems to work fine for me. I have been having the same problem.
I would definitely suggest upgrading back to 1.1.0 after completing the school though. It's very unfortunate that you guys can't experience the new school, it's very different from the 1.0 version.

You mean the 1.0.0 beta? it's the only release I haven't tried.
I was having the same problem. Updating java has fixed both issues.
Oh wow thanks @WyattLuke that actually is probably definitely it! KubeJS was added in 1.1.0, which uses a lot of weird Java things that you might not have if outdated. @General-Urist and @bellum128 please try updating Java and trying again.
I've updated my Java to 1.8.0_241 The bug is still there maybe there's a command to skip over that quest?
Are you using FTB Launcher? And if you are, are you using the exe or the jar? The exe launcher has java shipped with it, while the jar uses your computer's java. Try swapping to the jar launcher if you've been using the exe one.
Turns out updating Java actually solved the problem, on both the Legacy Launcher exe and MultiMC. Problem solved I guess?
Awesome :D
Let's keep the issue open though. I have it pinned, so anyone that has the same problem will see it first thing when they come here.
I have/had this issue too, when using the Twitch app. I upgraded my Java but Twitch forces an old version and I can't get it to use the new one, even using an extra argument I found in some comments about forcing twitch to use a new version of java (it just crashes then). Doesn't seem to matter if I pick the Native or Jar version of the launcher in the twitch settings. (I'm on a Mac, I don't think you can use the native launcher anyway in twitch for Mac, it always launches the jar version (1.6.91) regardless) If anyone knows how to get it working in twitch, I would be grateful. In the meantime it works fine in MultiMC. Just mentioning the Twitch App as I feel the author of the mod pack should be aware the issue exists in it. Thank you.
MacOS Mojave 10.14.6
iMac 27" late 2015
launcher: defaults to the 1.6.91 jar launcher in the up to date twitch client
java installed: 1.8.0_241
java twitch forces: 1.8.0.91
extra java argument that doesn't work = -version:1.8+
@spiderkitten FTB does have a MacOS Launcher.
Twitch is unsupported by us, try using the launcher here

Ah. I see. Maybe you could put a message about this in the pack's description over on the twitch client or something then, might save some people some time messing around trying to get it to work.
I'll check out the other launcher, thanks.
We do, the first time you launch 1.1.1 on Twitch it says that we're leaving it and links the FTB Launcher

We had this same problem with our Academy 1.1 setup. The root cause turned out to be the java version on the server and not the clients. Once we updated to 1.8_241 on the server and reset the tutorials everything worked fine.
@dark2phoenix of course it's the server's java that matters, if you're playing on a server. That's where all the code's being run :P
The upgrade quest is in the school

I think we're thinking too hard about this, as far as I've seen, there is no quest to upgrade a wood to an iron chest, only one to craft an iron chest

Hi, same thing happening here. Using latest MacOS and an old 13" Macbook air. I have current java. I installed the Mac OS ftb launcher and it still happens, even after resetting academy or creating new world, is there any way to just use a cheat to progress this quest?
Hello everyone, today I fixed this same issue by upgrading the java version on my VPS.
However, if some of you when you update java, end up with a version beyond Java 8 (I ended up with version 11).
You can change which default version you want to use on your Server by using this command on your console :
sudo update-alternatives --config java
Then you will have to select the version you want to be the default, choose java-8-openjdk-amd64
Now you can run the server and things should be fixed.

Hi @Carbonflight , what is your current version of java ? You can check it on a terminal using the command :
javac -versionorjava -version
Or just by checking the file in :
/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versionswhere you will see something calledCurrentJDKwith the version next to it.
