Can't get 4:3 in Gamecube games

Open HunterZ opened this issue 11 months ago • 5 comments

I'm using an original Wii (NOT a Wii U) with a Bitfunx new model component-to-HDMI adapter, USB Loader GX, and Nintendont.

I've tried tweaking just about every setting that looked relevant, but every Gamecube game gets stretched horizontally to 16:9.

My TV is a 65" 4K Samsung S90D, and it disables aspect ratio adjustment while in game mode. Disabling game mode is undesirable because that would introduce latency.

the only way to get gamecube games in 4:3 on the wii is setting the wii itself in 4:3 on system settings.

I tried that. It made no difference. It only made the system settings menus look different, but everything is still stretched.

that is a problem with your tv definition then you need to pick like original aspec ratio option or something im guessing your tv is set to full screen or something, if the wii itself cant be 4:3 fir sure nintendont cant either.

Judging from that, probably the only way to get around that with modern 4k TVs nowadays is to use a high quality upscaler like a OSSC Pro, Retrotink 4k or a low-cost ODV-GBSC instead of using Bitfunx.

Back in the day, when I had my Wii connected via component (original from Nintendo) to a Samsung LED TV, Nintendont still didn't exist, and I played Gamecube games with WiiGator, all 4:3 games were already stretched. I had to select 4:3 aspect-ratio on TV (in game mode) to fix the stretching. So I don't think it's a Nintendont issue; it's just the way Wii works with its "fake anamorphic" output.

If your TV can't add black bars for 4:3 aspect ratio, then you can try just the opposite: hack the games to 16:9 widescreen, so they fit to the screen. You can get WiiRD codes from ralf@gc-forever, and a lot of them have 16:9 widescreen codes. You can load them with a launcher like USB Loader GX. BTW, some GC games have native widescreen options, check it.
