What's best for individuals verses the community

Focusing on what is best not just for us as individuals, but for the overall community

While I agree with the spirit of this sentence, I think is is slightly problematic. The way it reads right now, I'd interpret it as putting community over individuals.

A common example of where that might be a problem: If someone works incredibly hard to the detriment of their personal life in order to provide something of significant value to the community as a whole. This is quite common in Open Source, where developers get burned out trying to serve the community, to their personal detriment.

In my opinion we need to balance both individual needs and community needs, rather than setting a precedence.

I think a simple wording change (adding the word 'also') would suffice:

Focusing on what is best not just for us as individuals, but also for the overall community
