We spoke about this in the 30th Gridcoin community hangout, I think if you were to apply for the google summer of code to work on BOINC core dev work you could perhaps get funded, but what would be most likely to be accepted is creating a BOINC project for distributing Apache Spark or Google Tensorflow - one of the BARK (Apache spark over BOINC) students was hired by google...
