The computation is stateless, nothing really continous, just like mining. It's the same when you run for a long time and when you just start it.

but surely the nonce would be reset to 0? meaning that you would re illiterate over nonces you have already tried

No, the nonce (seed) is random every time.

works like all the other vanity generators ... in theory there could be rework when you restart the tool (despite the new random seed), but in practice the solution space is so huge that it won't matter
