Errors when clicking on the layout icon

On Debian 9, awesome v. 4.0, tyrannical with default config: When clicking on the layout change button (in the top right corner) error messages appear (see the attached screenshot) and the layout does not change. It works however when using the keyboard combo (WIN-SPACE).
