@mvdebolskiy @rosiealice @rgknox can you comment on the status of this one? I know @mariuslam is gone, but is there someone else that can bring this in without him? It's also closely coupled to the FATES PR which has the real work in it. I'm just wondering how this should be handled.

I am not that familiar with FATES coding conventions, but I can try to rewrite Marius's code based on the current commit if you want. We'll discuss this with Rossie at the noresm-ctsm meeting this week.
