Multi year MODIS LAI stream for CLM5 SP mode

Open lawrencepj1 opened this issue 4 years ago • 15 comments

The existing multi year MODIS CLM prescribed LAI is from CLM4 and runs from 2001 to 2013. The default SP MODIS LAI is a monthly climatology from MCD15A2 for the years 2003 - 2015. An updated version of the multi year CLM5 LAI for 2003 - 2020 would be a valuable addition to the CLM5 functionality.

@lawrencepj1 what's the status of this update?

@mvertens and @lawrencepj1 and I talked about this a bit. Mostly in the context of her making sure LAI streams works in NUOPC. But, this new LAI dataset should be done in the new NUOPC setup rather than the MCT framework.

Has this been merged into the mksurfdata_esmf work now, or since it's using LAI streams is there a different workflow to create the data? I'm curious about the logistics of running with higher spatial or temporal frequency datasets here?

@wwieder since this is an LAI stream it's independent of the ctsm5.2.mksurfdata branch work. And I view that as a benefit of using streams since they can be made independent of the surface dataset. Since the surface dataset involves a whole mix of parts it's a much more complicated and intertwined task. The workflow is we are reliant on the tools that @lawrencepj1 has to create this type of dataset. @lawrencepj1 can you update us on the status of this? I'll also send an email out about it.

@lawrencepj1 I was also wondering about your post-processing for the MODIS LAI product. I have seen some papers that show it is fairly noisy and has some extreme values that warrant correct/post-processing (e.g., Yuan et al. 2011, more recent update)

@lawrencepj1 what's the status on this work?

Also, removing this from CTSM5.2 project but adding it to CTSM6 highlights.

tagging @katiedagon and asking her to add Daniel Kennedy and Linnia Hawkins to this issue. There is interest in MODIS LAI from the PPE work.

@ekluzek @lawrencepj1 let's talk about this tomorrow. Specifically, what version of MODIS is setting LAI and then being used for SP and what is the most recent reference that can be cited for this data?

Given gaps in the data, is this something we think we can realistically deliver, @lawrencepj1 ?

wwieder avatar Apr 19 '23 00:04 wwieder

Hi @wwieder. It really depends on the timeframe. If it is by the end of this summer then maybe otherwise I would go with no.

lawrencepj1 avatar Apr 19 '23 13:04 lawrencepj1

CESM3 release is scheduled for Fall 2024. Maybe we can discuss Thursday if this is something that's technically realistic and practically achievable.

wwieder avatar Apr 19 '23 13:04 wwieder

Great that does seem like a more achievable timeframe. In that case I think we would want to have it done this year with supporting code and testing completed by the end of 2023.

Thanks, Peter.

FWIW, it seems getting FATES LULCC and wood harvest issues resolved would be a higher priority for dataset contributions, but we should discuss at the CLM meeting.

wwieder avatar Apr 19 '23 14:04 wwieder

Okay lets talk about priorities and we can make plans around that 😁

lawrencepj1 avatar Apr 19 '23 14:04 lawrencepj1

High @lawrencepj1, I'm trying to check in quarterly on some issues. Is this something that's still on your radar that we should consider supporting for CESM3, or is it unlikely to come it?
