Thanks pbosgraaf. I was doing as you suggest but different directories and using the command line instead of the configuration file, but to play safe have repeated using your instructions...

Found the source of my problems - I hadn't mapped any channels in tvheadend, so the channel list was empty. Naughty! Hope this will help someone else with similar problems....

Had no problems compiling with sudo ./configure and using up-to-date Raspbian.
