Document whether SIM card is needed

Open WesleyAC opened this issue 9 months ago • 2 comments

It's unclear to me from reading the README whether a SIM card for the Orbic is needed or not to use rayhunter. My assumption is that it is required, since seeing the full range of what traffic could look like would presumably require having valid subscriber information, but it's not 100% clear to me, and I would expect that to be explicitly mentioned in the section that mentions hardware. This matters since the cost and fuss of operating one of these devices is affected by whether a recurring subscription for a SIM card is required for it to remain useful.

Looks like you need a valid and active sim as per https://github.com/EFForg/rayhunter/pull/105

No you do not, that PR is still a work in progress.

Do I need an active SIM card to use Rayhunter?

It Depends. Operation of Rayhunter does require the insertion of a SIM card into the device, but whether that SIM card has to be currently active for our tests to work is still under investigation. If you want to use the device as a hotspot in addition to a research device an active plan would of course be necessary, however we have not done enough testing yet to know whether an active subscription is required for detection. If you want to test the device with an inactive SIM card, we would certainly be interested in seeing any data you collect, and especially any runs that trigger an alert!

I have an inactive SIM card in mine. What data would be useful? Is there any way to test it to see if it could make a detection?
