Just reinstalled PB from the EFF website and it seems this is fixed.

However I expected PB 1.0.3 to be installed while the new version is also labelled with 1.0.2 in the add-on manager.

Okay, experienced the issue again (with the "new" version). So it's not fixed.

And I'm still curious about this version number discrepancy.

I am not able to reproduce this at all, but I would accept a patch if someone can come up with a fix.

I think with the new PB web extensions version, this likely won't matter anymore.
