error message for phone number should say it's not the format that's invalid, but the number itself
user says: "... asked for a phone number in a standard format. I provided that, and it rejected it as improperly formatted." mark says: We've heard this complaint before and usually the person is trying to use a 555 phone number. Perhaps we should be more clear in the error message that's it's not the format that's invalid, but the number itself
Thanks for this feedback! The message we show now says "Please match the requested format: Must be a valid US phone number entered in 555-555-5555 format". The phrase "Please match the requested format" is provided by the browser (both Chrome and Firefox) so we can't change that part.
I'm not sure how to make this clearer. Maybe something like "Must be a valid US phone number and be entered in 555-555-5555 format"?
Since 555-555-5555 is the example I'd almost consider saying "But don't actually use 555 because that's not valid."
not sure it's worth a bunch of hackery but there is a JS way customize those messages..
