Feature request: "Single View" mode from original Tab Groups
It seems like you might already have much of what this view already needs. (Yippie!)
The important items I think would be:
- Box along the top for each group with squares showing number of tabs in each (Ex: "Main" has a lot and "Programming" has far fewer)
- Once clicking on one of the groups, simply use all of the space below and "best fill" the tabs in that space (More tabs = smaller size ...)
- Show the number of tabs as number for the selected group. (Personally, I would like that number for each group somehow ...)
- Allow global searching, thus highlighting the tabs in that group and the remaining groups that match the search
Just wondering if this might be a future item and\or on your radar ... you seem to have much of this in one form or another.
The reason for the ask is that in my case I have A LOT of tabs usually and rearranging group shapes to get them to all fit nicely on the main screen was never very useful to me. I focus more on the number of groups I have (adding\removing temporary research topics) and use the single view mode when dealing with one group actively.
I think I want something similar. I am happy with the overview in "Manage Groups" (grid view), but often would like to "zoom into a group" to get a better overview over what pages (often articles relating to a certain topic) are in there, and eventually sort them or prioritise them inside their group. The tab strip at the top of the Firefox window is not really user friendly when it comes to getting an overview (only favicon, almost no text, no preview thumbnail) and "Manage Groups" (grid view) only shows the content of a group on about ¼ of the screen space (with tiny preview thumbnails), so both are not convenient for my use case. Maximising the screen space used to show one group alone seems like the best way to solve this. I do not need the "box along the top" (1), because IMO "Manage Groups" (grid view) solves that in a better way.
Having this "single view" would also (additionally to the above) help solve following UX issue I am experiencing when moving tabs between groups, if these groups have a lot of tabs (>>100) and I have a lot of groups (15-20): Dragging a tab from one group to another involves a lot of scrolling inside the group (to find the tab) and in the grid view (to find the target group). I could open the "Manage Groups" grid view in one window and the "single view" in another and more easily move tabs between multiple groups. When moving tabs between just two groups, I could open two windows with the respective "single view" and drag tabs from one window to the other, which would be very convenient.
The missing single view is still the breaking feature keeping me on ff 52 lts with the old tab groups. I cannot live without this feature. Of all the tab group replacements simple tab groups seems to be the best in functionality, but the handling when you get past 6-8 groups gets pretty messy because each group takes up too much space. this is the problem I have come up against when trying to start new projects in the newer ff with simple tab groups.
As a stop gap, allowing user selectable group heights would help to condense the groups once you've grown to a lot, but the single view is still the best option for managing a large number of groups. it is easy to find your group, sort/easy to move like groups by each other, and easy to move tabs between groups far away. if you can come up with a feature that can hit those features then I think simple tab groups would be a lot better for it. planning to manage up to 30-40 groups is probably a good target in ease of use.
I miss the "single view" mode too. Been waiting years for someone to re-implement it, but no one has.
Curious if it is impossible to do post quantum or just a feature no one cares about?
If I understand correctly in the manage tabs view you would like the ability to zoom into a single group and show the contents of that group and show all the other groups as "tabs" to use as drag destinations.
I would also like this ability.
I end up dragging entire groups closer to each other to make moving tabs easier. Dragging groups is not a smooth experience as I have many groups and have to scroll the manage screen to much.
