Feature Request: Close/Delete Tab Groups when the last tab is closed
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. For a long time now I slept on this extension only to discover it a few weeks ago, and so far it's everything I ever wanted out of tab management. I can easily group tabs, discard tabs, bookmark tabs, all without any automation. It's taken some getting used to, as it's a slightly different workflow than raw Firefox, but for the most part everything is how I like it, except for one thing.
If I close the last tab in a group (as in, I'm done with the group) it'll open a new tab in the group, forcing me to manually close the group from the pop-up or manage page. I can see why this would be helpful, but usually if there are no more tabs in a group it means I'm done with that group. Furthermore, if I delete a tab group I'm currently in, I'll be force into an "ungrouped" status, when I would prefer to be redirected to the last active tab group.
Describe the solution you'd like Add a settings toggle to the settings page to determine behavior upon closing the last tab in a tab group. Option should include whether to open a new tab in that tab group, whether to switch to a different tab group, whether to delete the current tab group, etc.
Describe alternatives you've considered At present, the best workaround I have to is simply manually switch to a different tab group and then delete the tab group I'm done with, which isn't a terrible workaround, but kinda annoying all the same. Likewise, I went so far as to try a few other tab group extensions to see how they compare. At best, Tiled Tab Groups offered behavior similar to what I wanted, but it lacks the distinct toolbar pop-up of STG, and in turn the option to discard, archive, and bookmark inactive tab groups.
Additional context It might be handy to include the settings option as both a global setting (to be applied to all Tab Groups by default) and as a tab group specific setting (for when you want certain Tab Groups to either persist or dispose themselves independent of the global settings).
+1 I'm trying to figure this out. I have a bunch of groups that just have one tab, and that tab is the "new tab" (for me it is just about:blank). If I close the tab, nothing happens to the group, and the group is not deleted.
Even worse, if I close the window, it tells me there's a bunch of tabs that I cannot see.
Would also like, at the very least, the window to be closed when i close the last tab in it! The window being unkillable except by the window X is a frustrating unnecessary change from Firefox's usual behavior from an otherwise excellent plugin.
In my ideal world a group would only be deleted when the last tab is closed if it is an un-named group, while named groups would hang around. But i would be happy with either approach, empty groups accumulating in the Manage groups page, or all empty groups being deleted automatically, so long as closing the last tab also closes the window as usual.
Thanks for the good work with this extension!
I use it with the option "Create a new group when opening a new window", which helps a lot with keeping things contextual within a window/group, and having new tabs not leak into the "stable" groups (with curated content). Unfortunately, the downside (as pointed-out above) is that closing the window (or all tabs in the window) doesn't automatically delete the group, and quickly irrelevant groups start to pile-up.
I think there should be an option in the settings to, in substance "Delete the group when all its tabs are closed", and this should be met when closing a window.
In the meantime, I use the "delete current group" extension, but it's a bit hackish.
A workaround I use is to pin the manage groups
tab. Then, when I close all tabs in current group, it shows me manage groups
, which is lot better a UX, than being stuck with an empty tab that won't close.
That's a great idea @gndps. Thanks!
