Support for Firefox native tab groups (new feature – April 2025)
Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe. Yes. I'm using the new native tab grouping feature introduced by Firefox in April 2025 (link), but I noticed that the native tab groups do not persist after restarting the browser or when switching between groups in Simple Tab Groups. The groups I created with the Firefox native feature get lost.
Describe the solution you'd like I’d love to see Simple Tab Groups support or at least preserve the native Firefox tab groups. Ideally, they would persist between sessions and not be affected by switching groups within STG.
Describe alternatives you've considered I’ve considered fully switching to the native tab grouping, but it lacks many features I rely on from STG. On the other hand, continuing to use only STG means I can’t take advantage of the new native grouping feature from Firefox.
Additional context The new Firefox feature has great potential, but the way it currently behaves with STG makes it unusable. It would be amazing if both could work together or at least not interfere with each other.
You're only a couple of months late to the party.
TL;DR: There's no API to interact with them yet. There's this open bugzilla ticket regarding the implementation of an API.
As discussed in:
- #1237
- #1286
- #1275
- #1288
Thanks for the clarification - and for the links! I wasn’t aware of the Bugzilla ticket, so that’s definitely helpful.
After checking it out, I noticed that some key dependencies were recently resolved - which is really promising. Hopefully this means the groundwork is being laid for proper API support soon. Native tab group support could really enhance daily workflows, especially if it can be integrated (or at least coexist) with the flexibility STG already offers.
Appreciate all the work you're putting into maintaining this project!
I'm not a maintainer of this project - I'm just trying to help out when I have time by analyzing issues people have and "triaging" issues, so that the author doesn't need to spend all of their time alone.
As I've edited my comment in #1237 yesterday after I found the BugZilla ticket: the changes that they've already implemented are mostly to break even with the Chromium functionality, but the group name and color feature that the new native Firefox tab groups have still can't be controlled - neither can the groups visibility as a whole be controlled.
And that's basically what we would need in order for STG to be able to feasibly integrate well with the native tab groups.
What I see here on Firefox 137.0.2 and Simple Tags Groups 5.3.2 is different, my native groups persist as I restart FF, but they persist across all STG groups, making the native groups feature a little useless when combined with STG, because native groups created in one STG group will appear in all other STG groups. Both of them combined would be a great solution for having a second level of grouping within each STG group.

There appears to be different behavior with horizontal and vertical tabs. With horizontal tabs the native groups persist after restart. With vertical tabs the native groups do not persist.
