currently running 0.1.6 on a Mac ... is it imperative that I update to the newest version?

if so, what's the easiest way to do that?

Sorry for a late response. You are talking about Electrum Personal Server right? As long as it's connecting Electrum to your Bitcoin Core node it's not crucial that you update.
