Construct the crowdfunder reward “Wall of Heroes”

Open zarino opened this issue 7 years ago • 33 comments

We need to construct a Wall of Heroes, as promised in our crowdfunder.

@DoESsean can you confirm how many tiles we need of each size? (Assuming 2 different sizes for the two reward levels?) Also, have we promised multi-colour prints for the upper reward tier? Or would single colour do?

@dazz-ling suggests laser etching onto black / dark grey metro tiles. Then we grout them into the space currently taken up by OSB, above the hatch in the event room. Looks like we can fit 5½ 200mm metro tiles across that space, with lots of room for grout between.

zarino avatar May 23 '18 16:05 zarino

There are 36 smaller bricks claimed, and 21 larger (the Crowdfunder site says 20, but I contacted the £1000 donor to see if she wanted anything, and she finally relented and said she'd have a brick).

If those numbers don't tessellate correctly, I reckon we could have some blank ones in there which could be filled in at a later date for particularly heroic acts.

DoESsean avatar May 24 '18 13:05 DoESsean

What happens about the rest of the wall area - i.e. the part not covered by reward bricks? Do we leave that empty, to be grouted and tiled at a later date? Or do we tile it all? How would that let us add new reward bricks in future?

As soon as it's decided on what they want to make it put of I'm happy to etch stuff.

@DoESsean Am I right in thinking that this is mostly stalled on us not knowing all the quotes/text that needs to go on the tiles?

Is it possible for us to make and install tiles for the ones we've got quotes for? (That would also let us send photos to other people we're waiting on, to encourage them to furnish us with their text...)

I need to poke myself to get on with figuring out how this Creality printer works.

Can try some printing here if you want to give me a couple of designs to do @DoESsean

ajlennon avatar Mar 10 '19 11:03 ajlennon

The last time I spoke to @dazz-ling, admittedly a while ago, he was hoping for some more specific direction from @DoESSean and @zarino but was still intending to engrave tiles. It might be worth checking if he still wants to do it before moving on.

Quite. Not a good business move. That said the CNC business intrigued me as that’s probably also a good way to shape and etch things cheaply? We didn’t have that as an option when we started this conversation did we?

ajlennon avatar Mar 10 '19 14:03 ajlennon

@amcewen I think it actually stalled because we just stopped thinking about it. There's no issue whatsoever with getting on with the ones we already have, and my chasing the rest up as we go.

I think the main problem is that, despite the many short conversations that have been had around this, I don't think we ever got to any proper consensus about where it would go, who would be in charge of what bit, or absolutely nailing down the sizes.

DoESsean avatar Mar 12 '19 10:03 DoESsean

Ok, so the latest on this:

@dazz-ling is going to etch tiles in the laser cutter. Here’s an example:

IMG_8431

Aparently the tiles are fairly cheap. Not sure which colour we should go for – I’m guessing the etch won’t show at all on white, and might not show particularly well on black, so perhaps a fashionable architects grey to match the beams and doors? If not, I’d say randomly pick a colour, and stick to it for all the tiles.

@dazz-ling I wonder whether there’s anything we can do to avoid the patchy etching visible in this close up? Not a deal breaker, but if there’s an easy fix, we’d be mad not to do it.

IMG_8432

As for what goes on the tiles, I’d say:

  • For logos – keep the logos at least 1 cm away from all edges.
  • For names – use the Transport font we use everywhere else in DoES (I can lend you a copy of the proper font if you don’t want to use the crappy Raoul Transport Brittanique clone) and keep it vertically and horizontally centred, with a consistent font size across all the tiles, and again making sure that there’s at least 1 cm of clear space around the edge.

Does that sound sensible?

zarino avatar Jun 22 '19 11:06 zarino

One for the bluenoses eh?

ajlennon avatar Jun 22 '19 12:06 ajlennon

I’d like to see what the transport font looks like for this purpose because yes that one we’ve used can look awful when it’s not being used for traffic signs.

We discussed this in the Directors' meeting. It seems ready to go ahead. I'd be happy to drive @zarino and/or @dazz-ling to a tile shop to buy the tiles.

JackiePease avatar Sep 07 '19 15:09 JackiePease

@jackie1050 and I went to look at tiles from a local shop, but they didn’t have a great range of colours (ideally we’re looking for dark grey so the etching stands out) and they weren’t particularly cheap.

Given we’ve promised the higher tier of funders a "larger" tile, it feels like a mixture of regular 200×100mm metro tiles, and longer 300×100mm metro tiles is what we’re after. As mentioned at the start of this ticket, it’d be roughly 40 small, and 20 large.

This place sells dark grey metro tiles in the two sizes we need: 200×100mm @ £0.36 per tile + VAT 300×100mm @ £0.63 per tile + VAT

Delivery is about £30 including VAT. Plus we’ll need grout, and spacers, and stuff.

The OSB above the serving hatch in the events room is 1170mm wide and 1770mm tall. We therefore probably want each row of tiles to be about 1150mm wide (allowing an extra 10-20mm for the 2mm spaces between the 5 or 6 tiles per row), with the outside edges covered by a nice wooden bead, maybe about 30–50mm wide.

Anyway, 1170×1770mm is just over 2 square metres. At a ratio of 2 small tiles for every 1 large tile, we’ll need roughly 1.33 square metres of small tiles, and 0.66 square metres of large tiles.

Maybe we just round up to 1.5 square metres of small (total £27 + VAT), and 1 square metre of large (total £21 + VAT), to include wastage?

Does that seem ok financially?

zarino avatar Jan 09 '20 19:01 zarino

That seems fine financially. Agreement made during the directors meeting that we should get them.

amcewen avatar Jan 19 '20 13:01 amcewen

Keep in mind I have a bunch of free grey tiles that may etch well in the free pile, just need to test how they etch.

MatthewCroughan avatar Jan 19 '20 14:01 MatthewCroughan

@MatthewCroughan thanks for the offer, but I think we should go with the ones @zarino and @jackie1050 chose.

amcewen avatar Jan 19 '20 14:01 amcewen

I have ordered the tiles, which should arrive within 2 - 3 working days. Discussed with @dazz-ling who is still happy to do the laser etching.

JackiePease avatar Feb 06 '20 13:02 JackiePease

The tiles have arrived and are on the desk next to @DoESsean . @dazz-ling is ready to engrave them, but will would like @zarino input on font size, margins etc.

JackiePease avatar Feb 15 '20 17:02 JackiePease

We discussed this in the community meeting last month, and thought we should try to get this boxed off - possibly with just a sheet of laminate acrylic, if that speeds up getting it done.

Reading back through the comments, it seems maybe we just needed to lay out the actual text and logos.

I discussed it with @DoESsean, who pulled out a few examples of the text we'll need, and I've got an SVG for two of them:

Image

I haven't found the tiles though, they used to be under @DoESsean's desk. Have they been thrown out or does anyone know where they are now?

(If we can't find them then I'll switch to plan B and start to lay things out for a sheet of laminate acrylic)
