Refresh the Organising Events at DoES procedure

Open goatchurchprime opened this issue 8 years ago • 3 comments

The page at https://github.com/DoESLiverpool/wiki/wiki/OrganisingEventsAtDoES is wholly out of date since I merely ported it over from the original wiki.

We've got two pages requesting a particular event, when in fact the procedure should be regularized:

  • https://github.com/DoESLiverpool/somebody-should/issues/476

One way is to experiment with the ticketing system and its task list technology:

  • [ ] make a github issue tagged "future events" and copy out the template
  • [ ] decide the title and type (speaker talk/workshop, evening/morning/afternoon)
  • [ ] pitch the idea at someone you don't know to see if there's interest
  • [ ] pick the day and time and book the room
  • [ ] make an eventbrite page and update details in github issue
  • [ ] get it into weeknotes etc (blow by blow on the channels here https://github.com/DoESLiverpool/wiki/wiki/Digital-infrastructure )
  • [ ] prepare the materials and practice it on someone
  • [ ] check the publicity has gone out on all the channels
  • [ ] run the event
  • [ ] close the ticket

There aren't any event/meetup organizing tickets like this in the record, so there's always a first time: https://github.com/DoESLiverpool/somebody-should/issues?q=is%3Aissue+event+label%3A%22Meetups%3A+Events%22

@jackie1050 maybe open an issue for the running of the rocket workshop on Thursday with a shortened task-list, so as to help develop the template. This task list would just include the things you need to do in the next two days.

Maybe developing a comprehensive and easy-to-do https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checklist could take away some of the fear and doubt concerning running an event, by reassuring you that you are doing fine when you are.

The main bit that I can see on the existing wiki page that's out of date is the bit about talking to Paul Freeman, but encouraging more events is a good idea.

I'm not sure what @jackie1050 can contribute about the rocket workshop, given that it's @ajlennon and @huffeec running it :-D

As an alternative/addition, would some sort of event-organiser-buddy system work? Although lots of it can be reduced to following a checklist (and running an event really isn't all that hard), I wonder if having someone more experienced to ask about things or point you in useful directions would also help?

Once we've got the move out of the way, I'll be looking at ways we can make more regular use of the space, and much of that will involve classes and events (both free, as we have now, and more paid courses if there's an interest in that). The plan is to find people to run regular groups on various topics in order to fill us up to the point where there is something going on every day/evening.

I'm under no illusions that this will be in any way easy, but it's my eventual aim.
