Air condition in Dinky

Open Spikyflower opened this issue 2 years ago • 11 comments

The air in Dinky is often stifling / stale, which is due to the lack of ventilation - it's an internal space with no airflow.

Aside from that it's a really nice space, and it would be a much more useable room if the airflow could be improved.

Suggestion - can we install a fan in the door to circulate the air in the room?

This would immediately improve the space and could make it a healthy room to work and meet in.

The door is not a fire door so fire safety will not be compromised by altering it.

This seems like a good idea to me, unless anyone knows of any downside ("soundproofing"?)? @Spikyflower do you have any recommendations for the type of fan?

Is the soundproofing currently being used? I ask because when DoES was accessible, it wasn't being used very much in general due to the temperature in there.

I'm not under the impression that it is being used, or that it's actually soundproofing.

Just realised you might have meant the room itself - it seems to be in use a lot at the moment (both booked and ad hoc) but that might be because it's winter

Even the most low noise fans will probably generate some background hum. This could offset any lowering of the soundproofing effect of the door?

No the soundproof aspect isn't currently needed. I generally think it would be a shame to alter the soundproofing if we could manage not to, but modifying the door is probably the most low impact thing to do as the door is easier to replace than, say, the walls. We could consider installing an air-con similar to the one we have in the fibre arts room but that did cost around £2000.

Suggestions for fans:

Ideally we'd have 90 litres per second to achieve enough airchanges per hour for the room (6ac/h) (I'm going off the floorplan on the wiki and guesstimating the room height at 3m, = 252 m3 of space)

This one will pull 68 l/s https://www.airconcentre.co.uk/products/manrose-mf100s-100mm-in-line-mixed-flow-extractor-fan Similar but with a timer https://www.airconcentre.co.uk/products/manrose-mf100t-100mm-in-line-mixed-flow-extractor-fan-with-timer - but it looks to be a bit bulky for the depth of the door.

Alternatively we could get enough air change by installing three of these: https://www.amazon.com.au/Thermalright-TL-C12C-S-Computer-Included-Quantities%EF%BC%89/dp/B0BKKFBR9R?th=1 (not the right version of amazon for the UK but just to share a product which would do the job!)

If we added some HEPA filter on the intake side this would also clean the air. eg. MERV17.

Looks like a reasonable price and worth an experiment - maybe someone even has a suitable fan. Is it easy to supply electricity neatly?

JackiePease avatar Dec 18 '23 18:12 JackiePease

Alfred (Maker of Things) brought some fans in to the Repair Café today. @magman2112 has looked at them but isn't yet sure whether these can be used (they're currently by the nook).

What's the plan for this? And maybe as usefully, what are the criteria for deciding if the extractor fans are useful or not (beyond @magman2112 gave them a thumbs up)?

I was reminded of it when moving the nine extractor fans otherwise cluttering up the racking :grinning: If we can uncouple it from Mike having enough free time then maybe someone else could work out which ones can be disposed of.

Wondering if this will still be needed once the server has been moved? If we don't then maybe we could try to get one of them working to see if they're any use for art works before disposing of them.
