Fabric scissors are ruined
We have a basket in the fibre arts room containing sharps specifically for fabric and thread. Some of these, including the big golden scissors with the extremely obvious "fabric only" label, have been used to cut plastic.
They're now badly notched and can't be used to cut fabric any more, and should become dedicated plastic scissors, but we need
- A new pair of fabric scissors,
- A better (clearer??? hard to see how) way to ensure these aren't randomly used to cut things they're not suitable for.
That sucks :disappointed:
Do you have a link for some new fabric scissors? We should definitely get some more.
A few thoughts on how we might prevent/mitigate it in future...
- Impassioned pleas for others not to make the same mistake as someone else has, like this issue, will help convey that FABRIC ONLY MEANS FABRIC ONLY
- We should probably get two pairs as a replacement, then there's a backup if it happens again, so we aren't left with no fabric scissors
- Should we start calling these shears, so there's more indication that they  are  not  just  another  pair  of  scissors?
- We should get some more normal scissors, so they're easier to find than the fabric ones. Sadly scissors seem to be like scalpel handles and forceps, in that they're approaching being consumables in the space :confounded: (If anyone has links to decent normal scissors that we could get, that'd be handy too)
- Maybe the normal scissors should just be cast-off fabric ones? But I suspect that would be an expensive way to fill our supply of normal scissors? I don't think we should get the cheapest normal ones, but I'm guessing the fabric ones will be more expensive than general scissors?
As far as I know, the fabric scissors haven't been used to cut plastic. I did take the scissors out of the room on Sunday for around 10 minutes, as we were considering ordering some for plastic (we've ordered Fiskars instead). If they're notched then I imagine someone has used them to cut wire.
They certainly shouldn't be used for that, either, but the notches showed up immediately after they were used to cut polypropylene. The embroidery scissors, when I opened them on Monday, actually had a piece of plastic stuck in them. If you see someone using them to cut wire then by all means, but I have seen no evidence suggesting that's happened.
Fabric scissors are delicate enough to notice when they've been used to cut card, so plastic notching them is far from unbelievable. Hence the "fabric only" label.
The question remains, how do we stop this from happening going forward?
I'll stick my head together with Jeri and find some good, reasonably priced fabric scissors to replace them. I like the idea of a backup pair, too.

This looks like the product, but Karl's going to look through his emails and see where he got them
Thanks, Jackie and Karl. I think we might be better off getting some different ones to avoid confusion.

The dressmaking scissors weren't used to cut any plastic. Here's the store that Karl used, in case there is anything there which is of use: https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/mobziestore
Presumably you mean "weren't used to cut any plastic by the Plastci Playgroup folk" @JackiePease? There are lots of people in the space, and we're probably not going to find who did it. The important thing is for them (and the rest of us who, unlike you or @Robotorium, don't cut fabric) to understand that "just this once" is still once too many for using the fabric scissors for something else.
And then to get some replacements, once @Robotorium and Jeri recommend some
Yes, that's what I meant. If we're getting new fabric shears, could we consider getting some left-handed ones too.On 14 Dec 2022 12:39, Adrian McEwen @.***> wrote:

I asked the AI for some advice on this issue, and here is what it came up with.

I think I trust people who use the space and cut fabric over a super-fancy-predictive-text :grinning:
Any thoughts on which we should get @Robotorium / Jeri?
Jeri recommends these:
https://amzn.eu/d/1q9kzdC
They look good to me, although they are right-handed - do we need a left-handed pair? I know Jackie is left-handed.

I've ordered two pairs of those - one to be put into use, and one as a backup.
Would a shadow board to store them be useful? That could then have more of an explanation next to it about why they should only be used for fabric.
Getting some left-handed ones would make sense. Those ones were just right-handed, so if someone could identify a pair then we could get some of those too.
I think a shadow board would be awesome in the fibre arts room, also because we have a few very specific weird tools that could maybe have a few words by them, too.

I have an excellent left-handed bread knife from Taylor's Eye - their dressmaking scissors have some good reviews - although a couple of people saying they aren't great for thicker materials.
https://www.johnlewis.com/taylors-eye-witness-left-handed-dress-making-scissors-23cm/p3307558
The right-handed scissors have arrived. I've left them on @DoESsean's desk for safe-keeping - presumably it would be useful to label them before putting into use?
I've also ordered one pair of the left-handed pair that @JackiePease identified.
@Robotorium, do you want to spin out a new issue about a shadow board, as you'll have the best idea about what should be on it beyond left- and right-handed fabric scissors
The left-handed scissors have arrived too. They're all with @DoESsean at the moment.
Some scissors bought recently for cutting fabric (although not that great as it turns out) have a similar, but smaller scratch, as @Robotorium reported in this issue.
Only reporting in case someone can remember what they used them for.
The right handed dressmaking shears appear to have gone AWOL. I've replaced them with the spare pair. Probably best to keep an eye out for the previous pair for a week or so; we'll need to buy a new spare pair otherwise. Note: @magman2112 has the left handed ones to see whether they can be sharpened to the correct angle
