Make a "Do Epic ____" split-flap display

Open amcewen opened this issue 6 years ago • 7 comments

Extending the "Do Epic ____" branding we've got for the mugs...

Mug showing different endings for the "Do Epic ____" phrase

It would be nice to have a split-flap display at the top of the stairs to act as the sign to show people where we are once they come into the building. The DoES Liverpool logo on the left and then:

Do
Epic
~~~~~~~~~~~~
on the right (or something like that), with each '~' being a split-flap character.
We should connect it to Twitter (and potentially other occasional data events) so that whenever someone tweets @DoESLiverpool it will update to give a random ending.
Here's a split-flap display design as a starting point. I think @johnmckerrell has a bunch of stepper motors if we need them...
I'm not sure what a split flap display is but it sounds a bit like a web-dashboard?
My dash example might be just what is needed for this?
It deliberately doesn't involve a screen :-D
It's one of the boards that they used to have at stations and airports, where updating the text involves lots of split flaps flipping over to get to the character it wants.
I’m happy to CNC the Aluminum flaps for this. I’ve been looking into printing/marking too and there are a few cool ways we could make the letters. Do we have a size idea?
I’ve wanted to make one of these signs, for the stairs / first floor landing, since we moved in! Would love to help out, if I can. Picking fonts and that sort of thing ;-)
This project is at the Open Hardware Summit - https://github.com/ToonVanEyck/OpenFlap
Claims not to be production-ready in the readme, but looks quite ready in this video 😀
Noting here for if/when we want to pick this up again
