Bug: Image or Video upload sometimes doesn't work and you can't press 'retry'

Open pacorob opened this issue 2 years ago • 10 comments

I've noticed that when you try to post an image or video it now happened three times that there was an error when trying to upload the video or image (while having a stable internet connection). I wasn't able to press the 'retry' button so could only cancel the upload. When I then try to open the photo album again to upload the image or video nothing happens. The only option you have then is saving the post as a draft and reopen it and then attaching the image or video.

Similar issue here. I've noticed it on jpegs that were imported to Apple Photos, and panorama images takes by iPhone. In all cases, I can upload fine if I use the Mastodon app.

Not sure whether this is the same issue I'm seeing - happy to open a new report if needed. The original reporter mentioned stable connection, but from my observations, image upload is extremely flaky over slow connection. Other applications, including a browser that uses the Mastodon web interface, can upload the images - but IceCubes mostly just fails.

So it might be the same root cause, now seeing it also over very stable and fast connections. For example, sometimes uploading two images works on the 8th or 10th attempt.

For me, even a video I saved from TikTok that’s 1.3MB doesn’t upload. The buffering animation just endlessly spins. This also happens when I try to upload GIFs. If I switch to Mastodon’s iOS app or Mammoth, I can upload. I’ve tried deleting and reinstalling the app twice on separate occasions and it doesn’t resolve. I’m on v1.9.11 on iPhone 15 Pro Max running iOS 17.1.2.

Using the web interface, I had 3 failures uploading a small .mp4 before it correctly processed it. The problem is not in Ice Cubes unfortunately, but I could have a better retry UI.

I strongly suggest stop using that platform it's a communist based platform 🇺🇸🆔

Thank you…a more detailed retry UI could help. I just tried uploading using web interface and had no issues so at least I have alternatives until it eventually gets resolved by whomever outside of IceCubes.

Weird, I'll dig more, I definitely have a lot of issues using the web interface. Mabe other clients are doing things differently tho, with auto retry etc...

Indeed, this problem is more obvious on a bad connection. Some automatic retry might help, and perhaps manually-initiated one as well - otherwise one image failing means re-uploading them all (as image ordering cannot be changed, and it's rare for the last image only to fail).
