How do I add Tags to a file type while using Details Pane?

Open burt-ie opened this issue 5 years ago • 9 comments

I use the Details Pane in Windows explorer and want to add the "Tags" option to specific file types, JPEG, MP4 etc as it is easier to tag files this way rather than having to open the properties box and click on the details tab.

I had this set up with FileMeta before on my PC (a friend done it for me) but I recently reinstalled windows and have lost the ability.

How do I go about doing this? Can somebody explain the process to me please as I am finding it a little difficult and don't know how to add the Tag option back.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Does the tutorial mentioned in Issue #54 help you?

It seems that I have similar issue. I've reinstalled Windows 10 Pro few days ago and FM is no longer working as it used to. After I add a new Handler, the properites' values can't be edited (neither through the Details Panel nor through [right click] -> Properties -> Details. I've tried with various properties and file types (png,dwg.3dm,pdf).

I would greatly appreciate any help.

What version of Windows are you running? You can find out by running a program called winver (just type its name in the search box at the bottom left)

Thank you for the response. I'm running Windows 10 Pro, Version 1903 (OS Build 18362.145)

Thank you. I don't have any machines running this new build yet, but I will check it out as soon as I can. The only other thing to try is uninstalling and reinstalling File Meta, to make sure everything is setup correctly. This will leave your configuration intact.

I've already tried that. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

I now have a Windows 1903 build running, but I'm not experiencing the same problems.

A supplementary question: is the problem just that the meta data is not editable, or do existing meta data values not appear at all?

More things to try:

  • add the File Meta handler to a new extension, for example .txt. When I tried this, I can edit Tags and Comments in the details panel, and display them as columns in the list view.
  • remove the handler from an extension, then add it again.

I've just tried it on a couple machines with build 1903 and I don't have any issues with it. Thanks for the tool, by the way! ))
