Same problem here, every time I try to log in with Google, after the login popup closes I get the popup_closed_by_user error. But I didn't close it, it automatically closes once the login procedure is completed.

Turns out that the reason is that the browser is blocking pop-ups, turn the block off and it works. In Firefox, disable "Enhanced Tracking Protection" for the website.
