Idea: Collaborative survey preview

Open LeaVerou opened this issue 5 months ago • 2 comments

This is a low-priority, big picture idea that I just wanted to record somewhere.

Currently, there is a survey preview before an actual survey launches, but there's no way to collaborate on the survey design in it, so that kind of collaboration happens in separate GitHub issues, docs etc. However, every time I involved the community in the design process, it has been incredibly useful for discovering blind spots. Examples include:

  • Asking which features to include: got tons of responses (mainly on social media), and many brought up great candidate features to ask about that were not on my radar at the time.
  • Asking for feedback about a specific question (e.g. bsky mastodon) has been incredibly useful for figuring out whether a multiple choice question makes sense, or is missing a major category

What if this was part of the survey workflow? What if the survey preview supported comments on specific questions, or even specific responses?

Are there third-party tools that let you comment on specific parts of a website that could be integrated?

Otherwise I supposed we could just use the existing commenting feature, but I would need to build some kind of dashboard to review them.

There are many, each with its pros and cons. When I needed this for my PhD thesis I used https://web.hypothes.is/ . It's not great, but it was better than the alternatives I considered (I could dig them up if it's of interest). I can't remember the pros & cons now though. I think one of the issues was lack of good notification mechanisms, so it was hard to know when there were new comments without checking their dashboard. It was very easy to integrate though.

That would need to be collaborative, which seems like a ton of work. Seems like something like hypothes.is might be better.
