Snowball Sampling

Open SachaG opened this issue 1 year ago • 5 comments

In sociology and statistics research, snowball sampling[1] (or chain sampling, chain-referral sampling, referral sampling[2][3]) is a nonprobability sampling technique where existing study subjects recruit future subjects from among their acquaintances.

I am testing a form of snowball sampling adapted to the survey format by prompting any respondent checking the "woman" option to help share the survey with other women:

Curious to get feedback on this idea, especially from women and/or quantitative researchers.

This seems like a great idea, but I'd like some social media integration (just some share buttons). I also think the non-binary or gender non-confirming group should be included, and also trans men because they're underrepresented even among trans communities.

Great points, thanks!

The way "snowball sampling" is used in that note is a bit weird. Snowball sampling is a bias, not something to advertise. After all, the reason you're doing this is to mitigate the existing snowball bias you already have, not to introduce more bias.

Agreed on @nickserv's suggestions. Also, I find the wording "women participation" very strange, alienating even. I suspect it was converted from "female participants", but unlike "female", "women" is a noun and cannot be used in that way. Perhaps "participation of women"?

I think "women" as an adjective is getting more common, as in "women athletes". "female" feels a tiny bit unpleasant to me, and can also be perceived as being associated with biological sex rather than gender identity, which is why I try to avoid it. But as I am neither a female or a woman I'm open to changing my mind :)
