Would it be at all possible to have this extension be off by default? (or to be able to toggle it without reloading the page?)

I would like it on by default.

When I made this, I remember that in order to toggle without reloading the page, the extension needed higher permission to access the page content, which sounded scary so I thought people would be afraid to use it. I don't know what the permissions are like today.

I would be happy to have it not require a reload. Maybe that permission could be optional? Maybe the button should create a pop up suggesting you reload the page when it's disabled.

Changing this isn't a priority for me, so I don't plan on investigating this any time soon.

Maybe it's default state could be a toggleable option like your suggesting for the reload requirement? Also that is a good idea, options never hurt. A lot of extensions have their own options menu or page like "Ruffle" or "Enhance for YouTube".

I've released a change which means you no longer have to refresh the page. It turned out to be easier than I thought, and I didn't have to add permissions or use the new manifest version.
