ECSO_00001108, Ash Weight Biomass

Open mobb opened this issue 8 years ago • 0 comments

currently, this class is a child of biomass_measurementType. this might be a problem. There are several related biomass measures. the general protocol is below, run sequentially on the same sample:

wet weight biomass: weigh the sample, fresh dry weight biomass: dry at a prescribed temperature to drive off water (eg, 100 C) ash weight biomass: dry at a hotter temperature to drive off organic material (eg, 500 C). ash-free dry weight biomass = dry weight - ash weight)

So technically, ash weight is not biomass at all - it's the non-biomass stuff found with biomass (e.g, bones, shells). So while it belongs with the suite of 'biomass measurements', because it's shares the same protocol, it should not assert that it measuresEntity some 'organic material'.

I'm beginning to think that while the measurementtype groupings we started with (so they could inherit characteristics) may not be a good idea in the long run. this is one example of why not.
